中国の博物館に展示された化石の大半がニセモノであることが判明した。なんと中国全土の美術館に展示されている化石のうち、95％以上がニセモノであるという。
中国のハイテク総合研究と自然科学の最高研究機関である「中国科学院」の研究員・李淳氏は、科学雑誌の最新号でこの事実を明らかにし、中国内のニセ化石問題の深刻性を提起した。
李淳氏によると「現在、中国の学者たちと共同研究している外国の学者たちの大半は、その存在に気づいている。共同研究のプロジェクトに支障が出ると気を使って言及しないだけだ」と述べる。ニセ化石が氾濫する理由は、ニセ化石の製造業者は比較的安いコストで高収益が保証される点にあるという。
また、「数年前、中国の西部で爬虫類と鳥類の中間種とも言える生物の化石が発見された。もともとこの生物に尾はなかったのだが、化石の製造業者が尾を足して復元させた。その化石にまんまと騙された中国の学者が『爬虫類と鳥類の中間種についての新事実』とした論文を発表したこともあった」と語る。
